A group of young aristocrats arrange a wig party in an old priory with the object of humiliating Bitos, an ex-schoolfellow from a working-class family, who is now a Deputy Public Prosecutor.
Anouilh draws a strong parallel between these people, living in the social and political insecurity of post-war France, and the members of the notorious Committee of Public Safety in the France of the Revolution.
The play aroused a storm of controversy in Paris.
